Weimer’s hat trick leads Connecticut Fusion; Barron proves crucial at the back for Corktown AFC

METUCHEN, NJ – A larger slate of games in the second week of the United Women’s Soccer season produced some spectacular performances, as the UWS East and Southwest conferences began play, alongside the UWS Midwest conference, which got underway last week. Ashley Barron’s standout showing at the back for Corktown AFC earned her Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Tiffany Weimer’s hat trick for Connecticut Fusion helped her secure the Offensive Player of the Week accolade. 

Team of the Week

GK: Saundra Baron, Rochester Lancers — Baron, a Trinidad and Tobago international, made 15 saves, including several spectacular ones, in a season opening game against FC Buffalo.

D: Ashley Barron, Corktown AFC — Barron played a key defensive role for Corktown AFC in a 2-1 victory over Lansing United.*

D: Angelique Ikeda, MSC Peoria — Ikeda was instrumental in assuring that MSC Peoria protected a second half lead against Ladies Steel City.

D: Alivia Kelly, Scorpions SC — Kelly anchored the defense for Scorpions SC, in a 2-2 draw against NE Mutiny.

M: Anna Bagley, Worcester Smiles — Bagley scored the winner for Worcester, chipping the keeper in a 1-0 win over LI Rough Riders.

M: Marlee Taylor, Detroit City FC — Taylor scored from distance to help secure a win for her Detroit City side against Muskegon Risers.

M: Helene Farris, San Antonio Athenians — Farris was a factor in all phases of the game in a season opening win for San Antonio.

F: Tiffany Weimer, Connecticut Fusion — Weimer began her season with a hat trick in a win over Albany Rush.

F: Joan Nakirya, Side FC 92 — Nakirya found the back of the net four times in a dominant season opening win for Sice FC 92.

F: Hope Santaniello, New England Mutiny — Santaniello opened her scoring account for the season in NE Mutiny’s 2-2 draw with Scorpions SC.

F: Kelsey Araujo, FC Buffalo — Araujo scored the game winning goal for FC Buffalo after converting a one-on-one opportunity.
